Homemade Dulce De Leche

Dulce de leche is literally translated to "candy of milk". It's basically like a caramel, but with a sweetened condensed milk flavour. It. Is. So. Good!

This confection is made from slowly heating sweetened milk to change it's flavour and colour. You can buy it in a jar or can already made, and it tastes great with a lot of different desserts (um....or on it's own...)! But, did you know you can make it yourself. True story.  All you need is a can of sweetened condensed milk, and a slow cooker.

Ingredients:

  •  1 Can sweetened condensed milk

Method:

  1. Either empty the can of sweetened condensed milk into a canning jar, and put a lid on tightly or you can also leave it in the can. I've tried both ways, they both work great.
  2. If using the can, place a small plate under it to avoid getting a rust ring in your slow cooker.
  3. Place can (on a plate), or jar of sweetened condensed milk into a slow cooker, and add enough water to cover can or jar. If your jar is too big, but the water level is higher than the milk, it'll be fine, fear not!
  4. Place lid onto the slow cooker and turn onto low, and leave for 8 hours
  5. At 8 hours, remove can or jar from water, and open 'er up! Give it a good stir, and taa-daa! :)   Seriously, magic!

This will last for up to a month in the fridge (apparently), but I usually make it to use it in something right away.

Empty into a mason jar, or make it right in it's own can

I emptied my can into a jar only because my husband thought it would be bad to heat it in the can (chemicals, etc.). I didn't tell him I had done it that way plenty of times before, but I emptied it into a jar to appease him. He's probably right anyway.....I kinda hate when that happens...

Well, now you know you can make this yourself! Generally I would set this up for the night, and wake up with the dulce de leche ready in the morning so I would have it ready for whatever I needed it for (and I'll share what I used it for soon)! In the meanwhile, you could make it just to see how easy it is, and maybe use it to drizzle on your ice-cream, or even have some on toast. Yummy!
